~ THE STATE OF SKIJOR ~
Since we are half way through the 2026 season,
let's start with some fun stats about equine skijoring.
SO FAR. . .
2500+ teams have competed.
40 events have been completed.
20 events still remain.
12 events have been live-streamed.
200,000+ spectators have attended events.
$425,000+ dollars in prize money has been paid.
Over 150 competitors have earned points in SkijorCup.
Millions of people are following skijoring on social media
and billions have viewed the sport online.
Dozens of features have appeared in national newspapers or magazines
this season alone.
14 US states, 3 Canadian provinces and 14 countries currently engage in equine skijoring
though there is no common method or protocol.
70 equine events are already planned worldwide for 2027.
Fun fact:
There are 5 ways to skijor competitively around the globe with
reindeer, horses, dogs, automobiles or snowmobiles.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
This week chances are skiers will be racing behind cars in
Big Sky, Montana
at the F.A.T. Ice Race
on February 27th & 28th.
This is an extension of the annual race in
Zell am See, Austria
and renews a tradition of skijoring with sleek and impressive automobiles
which was popular in the 1950s in Europe.
A "full-on celebration of car culture" featuring "classic icons to future legends",
is how the event is described on their website.
https://fat-international.com/en/pages/ice-race-2026-big-sky
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Another motorized skijoring race that just completed its 8th year
was in Wallace, Idaho over Valentine's Day.
Organizer, Siobhan Curet, pronounced "She-von",
says the event has been growing in popularity from year to year
with competitors coming from California, Oregon, Washington,
Montana, Utah, Idaho and Colorado.
This small hamlet in the pan handle of northern Idaho
is thrilled with the business thousands of spectators bring into town.
The skiers and boarders are pulled into a jump
behind tracked ATVs driven by designated drivers at the same speed
of 30-35 mph to keep the competition consistent.
The competitors are then judged by two professionals who rate
the contestants on a combination of criteria which include:
Difficulty, Style, Execution and Amplitude
Extra points are added if the competitor elects to run the rails
at the end of the course!
Here are the winners from this season:
Men's Ski
1st: Tanner Blakely
2nd: Ethan Bruse
3rd: Owen Hedgecock
Men's Board
1st: Aiden Hazan
2nd: Shane Keller
3rd: Owen Cline
Women

2nd: Siobhan Curet
3rd: Krystie Folland

~ CELEBRATING THE HORSE ~
Welcome to the Year of the Horse!
Skijor USA, Skijor International and SkijorCup
are all excited to honor our equine athletes with a special point series
based on placement alone.
Please note: There may be overlap in divisions due to the fact that
races are not consistent in which divisions they feature at each race
(some have only Pro, others have only Open, some have both)
and some use "D"s so we used whatever translated best
(1D/Open, 2D/Sport, 3D/Sport or Novice, 4D Novice)
and thus, we have kept horses in the clearest category by race.
Here are the top 15 in each division thus far.

~ UPCOMING RACES ~
February 28 & March 1
Bridger Brewskis & Spurs
Three Forks, MT
This is a first year race
put on by Kelly Meeker and David Breck
of Bridger Brewing Company.
The event will be held on the brewing company's property
which routinely holds summer events like concerts
which right now are scheduled into March, April and May!
David started home brewing with his brother in Alaska.
In Montana, they use locally grown hops and
wheat harvested just down the road.
Local food vendors will complement the beer selection.
The race will feature an Open 4D, Youth,
Snowboard and Switcheroo.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Grand Lake Skijoring
Grand Lake, CO
You would never know that Grand Lake is
only in its second year,
and a lot of this is due to the professionalism of organizers
Steve and Delphine Eytel.
They also recruited the help of skijor friends who
remember coming REALLY close to having an event in the 90s
and seeing that hope dashed at the very last minute.
The race is run down Grand Avenue,
the charming central spine of rustic shops and restaurants
that makes Grand Lake so unique.
Spectators watch from boardwalks and under eves
or perched on rooftops and in windows.
They will run Youth, Snowboard, Sport and Open Divisions
with a Rowdy-Town Relay added this year!
This division consists of 3 competitors plus a horse.
The same rider stays on the horse throughout, but the skier(s) or snowboarder(s)
must stop mid-track and switch gear.
On Day 2, they exchange start positions.
This should be interesting!

Skijor Chewelah
Chewelah, WA
Held at 49 Degrees North Mountain Resort,
this event is in its 3rd year.
They have been blessed with plenty of snow recently,
so their course is looking great!
It is a 3D style event and both Day Money and Overall
will be paid, plus prizes!
Melody Riders Saddle Club is organizing
the event and they encourage folks to camp overnight
on their facilities. Sounds like a blast!

Westerner Park Skijoring
Red Deer, AB
Saturday February 28 Only
Westerner Days started as Red Deer Fair
back in 1892 and in the summer months this dedicated group
puts on a parade, chuckwagon racing, midway rides and live entertainment.
Now they have moved into winter fun and the nearby
Canyon Ski Resort is a sponsor.
This new event looks like a lot of fun
with VIP tickets sold out
but FREE admission for the general public.
Those who opted for the VIP seats
give aways, a designated bar and front row views are included.
Best of luck to organizers and competitors.
The Alberta circuit is going strong
and a lot of the same names are surfacing at events!
More power to you, Canada!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Meanwhile, on the eastern edge of Canada,
in Lefebvre, Quebec,
Traversy Ranch is putting on two events this season.
The first is February 28th.
The host, Yan Traversy, has a great sense of humor
which, if you understand French, can be enjoyed on his Instagram page.
His event involves 3 "Vitesse (Speed) and Obstacles" segments
and 2 "Freestyle" segments
that alternate throughout the program along with an "Entracte avec Guildo"
which we are most curious to hear about!
Both skiers and snowboarders are welcome.
The second event is planned for March 14th.

Poland
Local Highlanders will race in Zakopane
on March 1st.
This is the culmination of the annual Parada Gazdowska or Farm Parades.
This has been an excellent season for snow in the Tatra Mountains
so the village inhabitants have gotten plenty of practice
with their exquisite horses.
Check out their Facebook page for wonderful photography and videos
to see how skijoring is practiced in Poland.

White Turf
Saint Moritz, Switzerland
The first place win in "skikjöring"
on the third Sunday of racing, February 22nd, went to:
Erich Bottlang with horse, Ispahan.
Second place went to Valeria Selina Walther with Almacado Gree.
Third place went to Leta Joos with Los Angeles.
Silvio Staub did not cross the finish due to a skiing accident
midway along the course.
His horse went on to finish the race on his own and was unhurt.
The crowning of the Queen of the Engadine,
the overall skijoring prize,
went to Valeria Selina Walther
since her finishes over the three Sundays were the highest combined:
1st on 2/8, 2/15 and 2nd on 2/22.
If you don't think White Turf is a big deal, check again.
The article below articulates that the event goes well beyond sports, and
Calcuttas at Western events pale in comparison to the volume of betting at White Turf.
According to Enness Global,
it serves as a date on the global wealth calendar attracting international businessmen
from around the world who fly in on private airplanes and helicopters
and meet seasonally to discuss internationally mobile capital.

~ IN THE NEWS ~
In the past few weeks,
some articles about women in skijoring have been published.
We wanted to offer our own perspective
on the Women of Skijoring
based on hard data as to who has excelled thus far in the 2026 season
many of whom are building on their successes from 2025.
For example, as riders
Kristen Beck took 1st Overall in Sport at San Juan Skijoring
Monica Plecker took 1st Overall in Open at Gallatin Valley Skijoring
Rosie Rogers took 1st Overall in Open at Estes Park
Sarah Smedsrud took 1st Overall in Open at Coal Mountain Skijoring
Kimber Cook took 1st on Day 2 in Sport at Teton Valley Skijor
Harlee Manning placed 1st & 2nd Overall in Open at Wood River Extreme Skijoring
Marquise Young has placed 1st or 2nd in Open on the Utah circuit.
Strong female skiers have also emerged:
Madison Ostergren took 1st Overall in Sport at San Juan Skijoring
and placed 1st and 2nd at Teton Valley Skijor
Jackie Nadel, Hedy Seeber and Phoebe Alverson
are making a strong showing and gradually climbing the ranks
in Sport as well.
If you use the SkijorCup rankings
to determine what women are "ruling" the sport,
Rosie Rogers is keeping pace with two male riders in Open.
In fact, 7 out of the top 12 Open riders are women!
Phoebe Alverson and Kimber Cook are leading in Sport.
Again, 7 out of the top 12 Sport riders are women!
Kelsea Raymer leads Novice as top rider.
This time, 9 out of the top 12 Novice riders are women.
Madison Ostergren has moved up into 2nd place
after this weekend as a Sport skier.
Jackie Nadel is 4th in the Switcheroo following three men
and Phoebe Alverson isn't far behind.
This division requires skill as both a rider and skier.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Just to be sure, we also checked the 2025 results
and found that the same names like
Kristen Beck, Sarah Smedsrud, Rosie Rogers and Kristen Macasek in Open
and
Monica Plecker, Janelle and Lauren Urista, Dylanne Free,
Mo Ostrander, Bailey McKenna and Kimber Cook
in Sport dominated at races like
San Juan, Big Sky, Whitefish, Red Lodge, Boulder, MT,
Estes Park, Grand Lake and Leadville.
Last season, there were no women skiers in 2025 that
compared to male skiers in Open or Sport.
In other words, the names cited in recent articles are no where near the top
of race rosters and haven't won buckles like the ladies featured above.
Granted, Tayler Stobaugh, who is featured in one of the articles
has made her mark as a rider in Open over the past decade
with multiple top 3 placements.
She is taking 2026 off as a competitor but remains a key
organizer in the Teton Valley Skijor event along with her Dad, Neal.
We miss you out of the track, Tay Tay!

We aim to be factual and balanced.
We also aim to be positive, but sometimes the truth hurts.
