~ UPCOMING EVENTS ~

Topsham,
pronounced "Top-sam" by locals
is a town of roughly 10,000 inhabitants.

On Saturday, February 7th,
Topsham Skijoring
will hold its 5th Annual competition.

Last year, Topsham had 16 Pro and 20 Novice teams competing.
There are sure to be competitors from the Skijor Bangor
event of last weekend, coming back for more!

Topsham was settled in 1714,
when the Pejepscot Paper Company, opened mills on the river.
Across the river, in Brunswick, Maine, is Bowdoin College, founded in 1794.

Every summer, the town hosts a fair
whose activities include harness racing and truck pulls
so residents are no stranger to racing horses and towing weight.
Three ski hills are within an hour of Topsham.
What a perfect place to combine local talents and skijor!

For the history buffs among us,
skijoring was part of the Dartmouth Winter Carnival as early as 1916.
While Dartmouth predates Bowdoin by 25 years
and is 200 miles to the west,
both college towns embrace the same winter sporting spirit,
so perhaps skijoring was also in Maine 100 years ago!
We'll keep digging!

The Skijor Showdown
February 7, 2026.

Skijoring is expanding in Canada,
and this coming weekend, Skijor Alberta is hosting
an event at the Millarville race track just south of Calgary.
This is where Skijordue got its start.

Like Maine, Alberta has been blessed with plenty of snow this winter.
As of Dec 28th, Banff had 308% above its 30-year average,
Red Deer had seen 106%, Grande Prairie, 418%,
while Calgary had received 81% of its average snowfall.
Then, 10 days ago, a big system dumped more snow on southern Alberta.

As in Maine, organizers are keeping it simple with two divisions,
Open and Novice.
There will also be a red carpet fashion show
judged by Miss Ponoka Stampede to
crown the "Frozen Fashionista"!

In Europe, this weekend marks the start of
White Turf
in Saint Moritz, Switzerland.
The racing occurs on three consecutive Sundays
February 8th, 15th & 23rd.
This will be the 85th Annual event,
though the tradition itself began in 1907.
(Yes, White Turf is older than Leadville. . .)

The racing is streamed live on their YouTube channel
which is accessible through their website.
It is MOST DEFINITELY worth while to set your alarm
and watch skijoring Swiss style.

Horses are reined from behind by the skiers
and teams race all together on a full oval race track
built on the frozen surface of St. Moritzersee or Lake St. Moritz.
Last year, there was a field of 7 athletes, two of whom were women.

In St. Moritz, a German speaking part of Switzerland,
the sport is spelled "skikjöring".
In 2025, Valeria Schiergen won the skijoring title of
Queen of the Engadin with Schael.
This is her 3rd title since her debut competition in 2009.

The Farm Parades continue in Poland
where snow is falling generously this season.

Bukowina Tatrzańska
will be hosting the next event
on Saturday, February 8th.
This village is close to the border with Slovakia.
It boasts several historic wooden guesthouses built in the
Zakopane Style architecture.
They are majestic and magical to behold,
and this year the snow has created a winter wonderland
right out of the movie, Doctor Zhivago!

In Poland, skijoring races are run both with riders and without.
Last weekend, in Poronin,
21 competitors entered the "skiring" or riderless race,
and Bobak Lukasz won with horses Radar and Ren.
29 teams entered the "ski-skiring" event
and Bobak Lukasz won again with horses Radar and Ren
and teammate Raczka Marcin.

In Zell am See, Austria
skiers are racing behind vintage Porsches.

F.A.T. Ice Racing brings back a tradition
begun in 1952 in which cars are driven on a snowy track
and skijoring is a part of the action.
Last Saturday, fast cars towed skiers while fans
lined the course in fashionable hats and furs, Austrian style.

On February 27 & 28
the event will move to Big Sky, Montana.
Two years ago, it was held in Aspen.

Meanwhile, to the southwest, in
Südtirol, Italy
equine style skijoring is emerging once again with a specific breed.

The Haflinger is a breed native to modern-day Austria and northern Italy.
They are sturdy, agile horses well suited for maneuvering through
snow-covered courses so they are perfect for skijoring!

South Tyrol is in the northernmost part of Italy
and was part of Austria-Hungary until 1918.
This explains its mix of a German speaking culture and Mediterranean Italian lifestyle.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

This area is widely known for its impressive peaks called the Dolomites.
Just 15 km south of the South Tyrol border, in the Veneto region,
Italy prepares for the 25th Winter Olympic Games.
The opening ceremonies will kick off on
February 6th at 2:30 PM EST
(with a prime-time encore presentation at 8 PM)
in Milan, the sister Olympic host city to Cortina d'Ampezzo.

It has been 70 years since Cortina hosted its Winter Olympic Games in 1956.
According to an International Ski Federation report,
temperatures have warmed 3.6 degrees C. or 6.48 degrees F. in Cortina
so sadly, this may be its last.

The number of reliable host locations for the Winter Games
is decreasing and jeopardizing the games overall.

By 2050, there are only four viable locations predicted
to host Winter Olympic Games successfully: Oslo and Lillehammer, Norway;
Sapporo, Japan; and Lake Placid, New York.
Two other locations in the French Alps and in Russia
have also been mentioned.

~ BIGGER & BOLDER ~

Defying Father Time and Mother Nature
(they were short on both)
Boulder's Skijoring the Big Rock
was able to accommodate 166 teams
over 5 divisions last weekend.

The 4D separated the competitive field
according to the pace of each team's run on Saturday.
Then on Sunday, each division ran in that grouping.
Snowboard, Buckleless Beginners and Juniors also competed.
Oh, and don't forget those crazy enough to try
Switch-er-oo.
We were happy to see familiar names such as
Foster Kennedy, Josh Morrison & Nick Bentley on the roster.
Leave it to the Canadians and New Zealanders
to try something off the wall.
Thank you, Mark LaRowe, for once again capturing the excitement
for posterity and giving the community images that will live in our hearts forever.

~ LAST CHANCE SALOON ~

The Cache Valley Skijoring
event in Logan, Utah
was reduced to a single-day competition
after the first day, Friday, was cancelled after only 25 runs
in All Around and a partial Women's Division.

Experienced track builders who were there to compete
from out of state worked with local organizers to
scrape away the muddy, slushy muck and rebuilt a new track overnight.
They moved the horse track onto dirt and salvaged what material they could to
create a narrow strip of artificial snow for skiers and boarders
to navigate gates and hit a few rollers towards the end.

Each team was given a "one-off" or "make-it-or-break-it" run on Saturday
to vie for prizes that were meant to be fought for over two days.
Announcers repeatedly described it as a
"drag race."
The fastest horses were run at 9 AM for safety reasons,
but by the end of the day, horses were dodging puddles and the skiers
struggled to plow through heavy sludge pocked with materials
meant to absorb the moisture on the course.
Proper salting is typically a better method.

Sadly, crowds never swelled to the capacity the
bleachers were meant to hold, but the sun did shine on those present
who looked like they were having a great time.

At this Friday and Saturday's race in Nampa, on the outskirts of Boise, Idaho,
the temperatures will be in the mid 50's,
so conditions will once again be challenging to hold a safe and fair race.

Here are the Top 3 Overall Champions in each division.

Horses were not paid in Womens, so they are not listed.
We are still waiting on some Day Money payouts for Estes Park.
We have placed "+" signs next to names that stand to gain points.

We do not have pay out for Bangor, ME yet so
points were not calculated for this race.

For up to date rankings, go to https://www.skijorcup.com/

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

~ A LEG UP ~

We have decided to revamp the point system for horses
since not all races pay our silent athletes.

If horses place on Day 1 or Day 2 (and in some cases Day 3),
points are earned according to how many places were paid out to riders/skiers.
For example, if 3 places were paid, the horse in 1st place gets 3 points,
the horse in 2nd gets 2 and the horse in 3rd gets 1.
If 6 places were paid, horse in 1st gets 6 and horse in 6th gets 1.
For the Overall, the points are doubled,
but they are still calculated according to how many slots got paid in Overall.
For example, if 3 places were paid, the horse in 1st gets 6,
the horse in 2nd gets 4 and the horse in 3rd gets 2.

We think this is a better way to make sure that all horses
are recognized and acknowledged.
We can still calculate points by money earned,
but this may be skewed unfairly.
Hopefully, all races will pay horses in the future
to avoid this inconsistency.

Please contact us with any questions or possible errors.
We have recalculated the Open Horse points
in this revised newsletter due to one oversight already.
Thank you for your patience.

~ IN THE NEWS ~

Skijoring was featured in CNN
in relation to its Olympic past as a demonstration sport and
what role, if any, it may realistically play in future Games.

noting the frustration of having to cancel the much anticipated
return of the sport to Red River, New Mexico.
The complex and costly topic of snowmaking is discussed yet,
optimism remains about skijoring's future growth.
